In the recent Batman film (The Dark Knight Rises), the main character is in prison and a prisoner puts one of his vertebrae back into place… Weird scene.
Is this what happens during an osteopathic session? Definitely not. Osteopaths sometimes use manipulations that make a noise (a pop sound) to restore a joint’s mobility (not to correct a fracture, as is probably the idea in the film). This noise is not because of bones touching each other or going back into place. Modern thinking is that this is because of a suction effect inside the joint. Manipulation is pain-free, unlike Bruce Wayne’s experience in the film!
