Pain is often attributed to tissue damage. Lorimer Moseley, currently one of the eminent lecturers on pain, gave an excellent talk on the subject, that probably dispels a lot of misconceptions about pain. One misconception is that pain comes either from the body (“real pain”) or is in the head (“imaginary pain”). In the last ten years, we have learnt a lot about pain and this is one of the things that has been disproved. Pain is always in your head, i.e. in your brain. Depending on various things (including whether it’s the first time you’ve been in pain, how long you’ve had the pain, your medical history, your background and your beliefs) the pain evolves differently and may take a while time to reduce.
